No to workfare in Hackney

Submitted by Janine on Mon, 11/05/2009 - 16:03.

Dear friend,

I am emailing from London Coalition Against Poverty, a social justice group involved in campaigns for justice for workers of all statuses; the unemployed, homeless, and those demanding decent housing and better conditions.

As a campaign, we were involved in actions and attempted mobilisations around the appalling so-called Welfare Reform Bill, including a national week of action. The PCS also organised lobbying against the bill, but it passed in the third reading on March 17th. The bill calls for a number of draconian changes to welfare including the abolition of income support, radical changes to disability benefits, compulsory labour in the form of 'Work for your Benefits' and increased privatisation of Job Centre Pluses.

Hackney unites against the BNP: organising meeting Wednesday 22 April

Submitted by Janine on Wed, 08/04/2009 - 23:00.

To prevent the racist, Islamaphobic, anti-Semitic and homophobic BNP getting a London-wide seat in the European Parliament, we must ensure that people in Hackney participate in the elections to be held on 4 June this year. Due to the proportional representation system the BNP will get a candidate elected if they win just 8% of the votes. Consequently we need 12 anti-fascist votes to cancel everyone the BNP get.
