Northumberland Park picket 30 June 2004

Dear Hackney Gazette

I would like to thank the two readers in 'Your Opinion' in last week's Gazette who expressed their support for RMT's strike action on London Underground. Their support is very welcome: Tube workers are striking for better pay and shorter hours, and against up to 800 potential job losses.

The other person the Gazette asked said that she thought that safety is a more important issue. But crucial to safety is having a well-staffed railway system, with workers who are not exhausted by long, anti-social hours, and who are not forced by low pay to work overtime.

Your columnist Edward Case insults the strikers, but the only 'argument' he can muster is that (some) Tube workers are paid more than him. I suggest that Mr Case joins a trade union and fights for better pay, rather than knocking those of us who are doing so already.

Yours in solidarity

Janine Booth
