The next meeting of Hackney TUC will take place at the Community Hall, Navarino Mansions, Dalston Lane, Hackney, E8 1LB
(regulars please note the change of venue and time).

This will be an open meeting as we have a presentation on employment law and in particular recent changes in the law relating to unfair dismissal.

Questions will include:

  • In what circumstances is a dismissal automatically unfair?

  • What is the minimum procedure an employer must follow before dismissing?
  • Is it fair to dismiss as a result of pressure from a business client?

The evening will be the first in Hackney TUC's 'rights at work project'. We are currently working with the Hackney Law Centre and students from the Inns of Court School of Law to provide briefings on aspects of employment law, free of charge, to community groups, students, trade unionists and workers in jobs where trade unions are not respected by employers.

Who is this project of interest to?

  • Trade union members and representatives.

  • Community organisations whose members turn to them for advice about work place issues.
  • Anyone who has come home from work and thought "that can't be right".

After the presentation there will be a discussion about the project and how it can reach out to workers in Hackney who are currently unrepresented and whose employment rights are regularly and routinely ignored by their employers.

Come along to the meeting if

  • you are a trade unionist who lives or works in Hackney, or

  • you would like to support this initiative, or
  • you belong to a local community organisation, or
  • you would simply like to know more about your rights at work.

Other business The meeting will also undertake its routine business,
including reports from local disputes and campaigns, and the arrangements for our AGM in March.
