Organising meeting in Hackney to stop the BNP getting elected in the forthcoming GLA electionsSubmitted by Janine on Sun, 24/02/2008 - 16:49.
13/03/2008 - 20:00 13/03/2008 - 21:30 Hackney Empire, Hospitality Suite, Mare Street, E8 Speakers: Wilf Sullivan, TUC Race Relations Officer plus speakers from faith, community and political organisations in Hackney. Londoners will vote for the mayor and London Assembly on 1 May 2008. Due to the part proportional representation system in the election, the BNP will gain a seat on the Assembly if they gain more than 5% of the total votes cast. If they gain more than 8% they will gain two seats. All votes for other parties will increase the total vote and therefore reduce the BNP percentage, so it is important that voters in Hackney use their vote to try and put the BNP’s London wide total below 5%. If you love Hackney then you don’t want the BNP sitting in City Hall claiming to represent us! We will be leafleting across Hackney on the weekend of 15-16 March to alert residents to the importance of using their vote. Anyone aged 18 or over can register to vote if they live in London and are British, other EU or Commonwealth citizens. The last date for registration in time for the Assembly election is 16 April 2008. To register to vote contact electoral services at Hackney Town Hall. Meeting organised by Hackney Trades Union Council. Literature from Searchlight and the Southern and Eastern Region TUC will be available at the meeting for distribution. Please email John Page if you can assist in leafleting in your area.
