Part-time Community Organiser (temporary)Submitted by Janine on Sat, 24/01/2009 - 19:50.
As part of its on-going commitment to community organising and anti-fascism, Hackney TUC is seeking to recruit a part time community organiser. The role is for one day per week from February through to June, with the dual objective of building a sustainable community coalition and mobilising an anti-fascist vote in the June 2009 EU elections. The EU elections are based on proportional representation and the BNP need a mere 7% of the vote to win a London wide seat. With a low turnout expected every anti-fascist vote counts. The position would, for example, suit a union organiser or a community campaigner able to secure a secondment for the role. The project has cross party support in Hackney, as well as support from the borough Deans, the Jewish-Muslim forum, local trade unionists and community and campaign groups. However, there is a great deal to do to 'map' the community organisations in the borough, to establish their support and to put together a committee of volunteers to ensure that every home in the borough receives anti-fascist literature over the coming months. This is an exciting project, and will invovle working closely with the Hope not Hate campaign. It forms part of a wider national re-evaluation of how we isolate the BNP, in effect by organising those communities who feel abandoned by the political establishment. Lessons learnt in this campaign will be shared with the wider movement. For a job description and details of application, or to arrange an informal discussion please email John Page: john.page45@btinternet.com. Closing date for applications will be 9 February.
