Trade unions must unite to fight back

PCS scored a major victory in the courts this week when a judicial review successfully proved that the government acted unlawfully by tearing up our members' accrued rights through the Civil Service compensation scheme.

The scheme governs the redundancy terms for 270,000 PCS members, all of whom are now on the way to securing better terms.

The attack on the scheme - supported by the leaderships of all three main parties but opposed by 176 backbench MPs in the last Parliament - was an attempt to make it cheaper to sack civil servants.

It was a preparatory move, making us more vulnerable to redundancy, but the judge has now quashed their imposed deal, which had been accepted by the smaller Civil Service unions. They all now share in our victory, which will reopen negotiations and lead to an improved settlement and greater job security for all civil servants.
