participants in the Grunwick strike of 1976-1978 died at the end of 2010. Brent Trades Union Council, itself heavily involved in supporting the strikers, is holding an event to commemorate her role on Sunday 17th April...

Sweatshops, workers and international solidarity:
A conference for activists.

No Sweat’s fifth annual Gathering takes place on 26 November in central London. Expect high-profile speakers, films, lots of debate, a social event on the Saturday evening and Training sessions on the Sunday.

  • Film and discussion on the Bolivian Gas and Water Wars: Basta! plus Jose Sagaz from the Bolivian Solidarity Campaign

  • Unseen footage from Naomi Klein’s new film, The Take, about Argentina’s Occupied Factory movement. Plus a speaker who worked on the film leading a discussion about the events in Argentina after the 2001 crisis
  • A session which will look at Africa’s problems in the aftermath of the G8 summit. Focus on HIV/AIDS and including union speakers and activist Explo Nani Kofi
  • A discussion about the sweatshop-produced clothes sold by the Arcadia group (Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge) - with Labour Behind the Label
  • A discussion on the ethics of the Supermarket chains: with a focus Tescos and Wal Mart – including a speaker from War and Want
  • Discussion on water privatisation in Africa
  • Debate: what policies will lead to Trade Justice?
  • Migrant workers: a discussion about the Canary Wharf organising drive with a TGWU organiser
  • After the G8: plenary session and a chance to discuss where the networks created during the Gleneagles protests should go next
  • Student organising session about the national campus week of action against Sweatshops on 11-18 February 2006. Including speakers from People and Planet and Dan Randall from NUS. Plus Matthew Bolton from London Citizens on organising against low pay on campus
  • Arab workers' rights: including Saudi trade unionist Yahya al Alfaifi and a speaker from the Iraqi Federation of Workers’ Councils.
  • Venezuela: a debate between Hands Off Venezuela and No Sweat on Chavez’s project.
  • The Gate Gourmet dispute and the anti-union laws – Gate Gourmet activists plus speaker on anti-union laws
