The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), in reaction to the austerity measures in force in a number of European countries, is sponsoring a major European mobilisation on 29 September, with support from all its member organisations. Around 100 000 people are expected to take to the streets in Brussels and protest actions will also be held in different European countries.

Organising With Unions / Leafleting Against The BNP

At the Hackney TUC AGM on 14 February, we recommitted to campaigning against the BNP in the run up to the European Elections in June (where there is a real risk that they may get a MEP elected). However, we also agreed that, as well as working with community groups, we needed to make progress in building our own trade union base.

Londoners will vote for the mayor and London Assembly on 1 May 2008. Due to the part proportional representation system in the election, the BNP will gain a seat on the Assembly if they gain more than 5% of the total votes cast. If they gain more than 8% they will gain two seats.
