Some 35 NUT members at Haggerston School, East London, face the prospect of disciplinary action (up to dismisssal for gross misconduct) for respecting a picket line mounted by striking members of the T&G/Unite who work for the multinational privateer, Sodexho, in the school's PFI-built canteen.

This meeting has been called by Hands Off Hackney Schools, which was set up by Hackney NUT, Hackney Unison, and local parents.

On Thursday 30th June, kids, parents, teachers and supporters demonstrated outside the offices of Hackney's Learning Trust in defence of Homerton and Haggerston schools, and opposing their replacement with academies.

Nearly a hundred people attended a public meeting to oppose the closure of local school Homerton College of Technology and the spread of academy schools in Hackney. Called jointly by Hackney's local branches of NUT and UNISON, the meeting attracted parents, school students, teachers, trade unionists and community activists.

Lecturers at Hackney Community College took strike action on Thursday 7th April, in protest at the College telling staff that they would be made redundant.


The college has a £1.6m deficit, and has been threatening job cuts for some time. However, it seemed that these would be achieved through voluntary severance, and in a series of meeting with lecturers’ trade union NATFHE, college management gave no notice of compulsory redundancies.
